The College Football National Championship is over , and congrats to the back-to-back Champion Georgia Bulldawgs!.To me that means DRAFT SEASON IS FINALLY HERE! The final day for college players to declare for this draft has come and gone , The Eagles/Chiefs Superbowl is set, and the Senior Bowl practices start this week. This QB class looks drastically better at QB compared to last years , but it's starting to look like more quantity over quality for me as I watch more game tape. Plus the transfer portal has drastically changed the face of college football. I had never previously had more than 14 QB'S on my pre-season watchlist of draft eligible QB's , but I had 19 this year before the season started. Now I have watched a lot of them this year, and a way too many of those draft eligible QB'S went back to school , but there are only 3 QB's in this draft I would take in the first round. Plus Bryce Young is the only one I would be comfortable taking in the top 5 . However , I expect 3 ( Young, Stroud , Levis)to come off the board in the top 10 , and those are the only ones I would take in the first round at all at the moment. despite that I expect at least 5 QB's ( Mckee & Richardson are the likely other 2)to be drafted in round one because of need. Speaking of these potential draft eligible QB's , they are helped not only by the transfer portal, but surprisingly Covid as well. Too often these days QB's are rushing into the league with only a year or 2 of starting experience, but because of the extra year of eligibility granted due to Covid a lot of QB's are staying and getting a chance to polish & develop. Kenny Pickett wouldn't have been a 1rst rounder in 2022 without that extra year, and maybe the fact that Brock Purdy was a 4 year starter is part of the reason that he was balling out despite his low draft position. At the very least it will help us to sort through their potential, and make the guys who end up making it in the NFL as backups more polished. The transfer portal has also thinned out this current draft as a whole because a lot of players are taking that NIL money to transfer & stay in school , or just stay put & come back for another season to try and win championship and/or to improve their draft stock. I have finally finished preliminary watching all the early entrants into this draft class. I see this as a defense heavy draft where there is some quality at every position. It's especially strong at cornerback & edge rusher, and the underclassmen who I didn't expect to come out this year have only made both positions even stronger. In fact it wouldn't shock me if half of the first round could be comprised of edge rushers & corners when draft day finally comes around. The 2 clearly highest graded players that I have seen on tape so far are interior D-lineman Jalen Carter of Georgia & edge rusher Will Anderson of Alabama , and I can't see either falling out of the top 5 picks. On offense the depth of the RB , and TE classes are the 2 position groups that stand out , but as neither is seen as a premier position by most NFL teams that should cause some concern. In fact RB Bijan Robinson is that rare elite duel threat prospect for the position , and if I was just doing my board based on overall grade he would be #1 ahead of Carter & Anderson. So while I wouldn't take a RB in the top 10 , Robinson is the kind of high level prospect that could theoretically sneak into those heights. However the depth of the free agent & draft classes at both the RB & TE positions could cause teams to wait some , and then allow RB's and TE's in this draft to be huge values on draft day. Also on the down side , and in a reverse of past few draft no WR looks like a top 10 pick to me right now , and it seems like a slot WR heavy class for the most part. As a whole there haven't been many clear standouts at the position this season, but TCU's Quentin Johnston was my bet to be the top WR off the board. I even thought he might even get into the top 10 if he ran fast at the combine , but after not showing much against Georgia in the National Championship I don't even know if Johnston will go in the 1rst round anymore. Also, this draft is just kind of deep with a lot of potential , but its nowhere near as deep as last years in overall talent , depth , or potential. In last years draft a lot of very talented players , in both floor & ceiling fell to day 3, but I doubt many of either will be there this time around. Like always it is preferable to NFL teams that have the #1 pick that a QB goes at the top of the draft , even if the team that currently has the pick ( like Chicago) doesn't need a QB. As usual I think there is a good chance that a QB will go #1 overall this year , whether they deserve it or not, and if so it's another team trading up for their guy. All but 2 spots of the draft order is already set , and I only have to project the final 2 Superbowl teams now. I could be wrong, but this is my opinion about where the teams are at this moment. Sadly major injuries might still happen in the big game. Those injuries and how the final game ends will also be affecting team needs for the draft & free agency. Also, Lamar Jackson could still theoretically be a trade candidate if they can't work out a contract. Although its hard for me to imagine the Ravens letting him go after Tyler Huntley bombed this year when Jackson was out. Possible veteran QB'S available this off season that might still have some demand are Derek Carr , Ryan Tannehill , Jimmy Garoppolo , Aaron Rodgers, and even the GOAT Tom Brady. Then you have the recently highly drafted guys that might be available like Zach Wilson or Trey Lance who could be available , but I don't know how much you could get for either at this point , although if some desperate team offers either team a 1rst rounder for either guy I would take it . Mac Jones might be traded as well , but I'm guessing that hiring a real OC like Bill O'brien will help Jones right the ship. The picks are all mine, and if you don't like them you are free to comment and let me know why. A lot of trades will probably happen in the actual draft too, and since it's finally draft season again , and I have thrown a couple in here today , but the truth is we won't know much until a few things shake out. For instance 1- Where will Sean Payton coach, if he takes a job this year , and what will it cost to pry him loose from the Saints? 2- Will Tom Brady be playing next year , and if he does where? 3- Who gets hired to fill the current head coaching vacancies , and what type of systems will they run? I believe those 3 issues will play a big part in deciding if/and who trades up to #1 to take a QB, and many other possible trades. Also , Miami forfeited their #1 pick because of tampering with Brady & Payton ( It would be hilarious if Brady went to Miami now anyway) so there will only be 31 first round picks in this draft , but my projection of their draft position is clearly marked in red to make it known. Without further ado here it is. Agreeing or disagreeing is welcome, but please do it intelligently & respectfully or I just won't post it. so here it is. Enjoy.
