The College Football season is in full swing, and while it's still really early for a legitimate draft projection, but I am making a even harder prediction to guess the draft order. Congratulations Packers fans, because Aaron Rodgers shockingly returned to the team to make another run. The picks are all mine, but I have done really limited tape study on most of them. They are mostly players I couldn't help noticing while watching last years tape, or guys I expected to enter last years draft that stayed in school, and some guys who lived up to their billing early on. Due to the financial losses from Covid I expect another off season with a lot of veteran QB movement , and a lot of first round QB'S again, WHETHER THEY DESERVE IT OR NOT, and the college QB situation has gotten more muddied for me early this year. With big name QB's like Spencer Rattler, Kedon Slovis, and D'eriq King all faltering the first QB off the board is probably still up for grabs in most draft rooms . Personally I am favoring Malik Willis right now, but there are 3 other QB's that I can see challenging him for the mantle. So a lot of trades will probably happen, but I don't put trades in mocks until it's draft season again, although I think it's 50/50 that the top pick is traded to a QB needy team this year . Without further ado here it is. Agreeing or disagreeing is welcome, but please do it intelligently & respectfully or I just won't post it. so here it is. Enjoy.

The Packers are looking at defense come draft time, IMO. Lots of O line depth currently. Zadarius Smith has a bad back and a $29 million contract. It is way more likely the team will go for a Drake Jackson, Kingsley Enagbare or Zach Harrison.
ReplyDeleteWith Preston Smith & Rashan Gary around I think the edge is a smaller need. Plus Nojman is a free agent, and Bakhtiari is coming off a major injury. Billy Turner is having his best season in years IMO, but I don't expect it to last , and he is just average at best anyway. Plus they can save about 4 million in cap savings by moving on from him. Plus Royce Newman hasn't looked good so faron the inside. Green can play tackle or guard, which not only gives you depth, but also allows you a better chance of getting your top 5 O-Lineman on the field at the same time. However, that is not even the main reason for my prediction. I now expect the Pack to try to make a big play to try and keep Rodgers and Adams. The best way to do that would be to placate Rodgers, and I think the best choices to do that would be a O-Lineman or WR. Since the Packers haven't taken a WR in the first round since 2002 I am going with the O-Lineman.
Deletealthough the Lions will most likely draft a QB because it's their biggest need, I hope they pass and take BPA because this QB draft is one of the worst in recent history. They'll most likely have the 1st pick in 2023, if not they'll have a top 3 pick, and have extra draft capital to move up and grab their future QB. 2023 class is looking better right now, plus the Goff contract doesn't make sense to shed until after 2023 anyway.
ReplyDeleteI actually agree with you about passing on a QB, but I'm not sure the Lions do. If they take a QB now, having Goff on the roster would allow the rookie to be eased in at his own pace. Also, I think it's too early to write off this QB class just yet. Players often rise late in the season, at The Senior Bowl ,in private workouts & meetings, or at the combine. Personally If I was the Detroit or Houston front office , and I wasn't in love with any of the current QB's when my turn came up I would go elsewhere. I would either take the best player available, or trade back with a hopefully QB needy team. Both teams need a lot of talent to rebuild. It worked for Cleveland, and that's with the Browns missing on a lot of high picks, and their owner interfering and too regularly replacing the front office and/or coaches before they got a fair chance to see if their plans worked.
