2017 NFL DRAFT top 200

DRAFT DAY! I did 340 players in total, and I have watched at least 3 games on all of them except for the small school guys I only got 2 on some of theirs. Some of the more likely first rounders I have already watched over 10 games, and some of the guys I thought were going to come out last year I am way past that as well. So anyone on this list has earned their place in my eyes. This is a weird draft. I have never seen a draft where so many high end talents have so many long term injury concerns , are currently injured , have off the field or football character questions, or even a combination in some cases. Not to mention there are lot of top talents with limited starting experience at a high level of football . Also in the last 2 months Sidney Jones, Fabian Moreau, Rueben Foster, and Jabril Peppers and now even Gareon Conley have had major injuries or character questions that affected their draft stock. That's 3 guys I had definite first round grade on and 2 guys I had a second on. The draft is more skewed toward defense in both depth and possible top 100 talents. Corner back , edge rushers ,and safety are the deepest positions on that side of the ball, but as I mentioned the corners have taken a huge hit in possible first rounders recently. On offense the deepest positions are ones that have been devalued on the NFL over the last decade, but if your team needs a TE or running back , this is good year for you. While there is no sure fire top 10 number one receiver prospect, there is a lot of depth at that position too, but all the possible first rounders have questions as well. While I wouldn't be surprised if QB needy teams select as many as 4 signal callers in the first round I ONLY have a first round grade on 2 of them of them right now,  and I would only take either of them in the bottom 3rd of the first round . Keep in mind that some of these guys have injuries discovered during the medical checks that aren't released to the general public to their full extent, have unknown to the general public character questions, and impressed and/or disappointed at the combine in interviews ,or during visits with teams.  A lot of the prospects have former or current NFL player comparisons below their names , so you can get an idea of who it is your team might be getting. The higher they are ranked the more likely I think they reach that comparison. So while Pat Mahomes reminds me of Brett Favre, I have ranked him far enough away from the top to point out it's not a high probability that he reaches that comp. If you don't know the player then just run a search.  The heights and weights are based on their listed measurements at the combine in most cases, but some come from Pro days. Feel free to leave a comment. Agreeing or disagreeing is welcome, but please do it intelligently and respectfully. If you can't, or resort to personal attacks, I just won't post it. It's actually a top 203, because there is one extra 1 each for faith, family, and football. So here it is. Enjoy.

# Is for a player with with reported character or maturity concerns.

** Is for a player with reported injury concerns.

BLUE CHIP TALENTS

These are the kind of players that I would be willing to trade into the expensive top 10 to get, These guys all have shown consistent growth over their college careers, have at least 2 back to back years of good tape, have strong motors, and are without significant injury or character concerns. As always franchise quarterback trumps all, but I don't have one in this group.

1.MYLES GARRETT -OLB/DE - TEXAS A&M- 6"4", 272
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - JULIUS PEPPERS - PANTHERS
STRENGTHS - Elite , burst, tools and frame. Productive from day 1 in college. Still productive when playing hurt & facing constant double teams. Dominates weaker tackles. Has improved against the run, Scheme diverse.  Can win with speed or power, has a wide array of effective pass rush moves . Violent hands. Team captain and good character. Dominant combine. High ceiling and floor.
WEAKNESSES - Needs to improve aiwareness , to consistently stay home, and set the edge when it's his responsibility. Needs to get better and consistently staying low ,stacking & shedding, and at keeping his motor up against the run. Needs work on his counters when his first move is stopped.

2.JONATHAN ALLEN - ALABAMA - 6"3", 286
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - JUSTIN SMITH - retired
STRENGTHS - Team captain and great character. Clear cut best 3 & 5 technique in the draft, and could also be a stud 4-3 strong side end who can kick inside in sub packages. 3 year starter at an elite school who constantly improved throughout. Extremely strong for his size. Violent but tactical hand use. A smart technician who rarely makes a mistake, and he makes plays all along the line of scrimmage. Explosive first step. Great hand placement controls , stacks ,and sheds like a veteran NFL PRO BOWLER. After mostly being a pass rush specialist in 2015 that could have been a top 10 pick last year, he returned to school , got bigger & stronger, and also became a dominant run defender. The only non QB who had a chance to challenge Myles Garrett for the #1 pick coming into the year ( the other 2 were Malik McDowell and Tim Williams) who actually did what he needed top fulfill his potential. Elite motor. Best tape  and my favorite player in the draft. High floor.
WEAKNESSES - Not the biggest guy inside and will occasionally get overwhelmed by bigger stronger blockers or double teams. Not an elite athlete, which is rare for a potential top 5 pick on  defense .

3.SOLOMON THOMAS - DE - STANFORD - 6"2" , 273
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - MICHAEL BENNETT - SEAHAWKS
STRENGTHS - High football IQ film junkie with great character . Really athletic for such thick squatty looking guy.  2 year starter who is only 21 and who's best football should be ahead of him. Extremely strong for his size, and it's shocking how much havoc he wreaked inside against the run at while weighing in the 270's. Had a good 2015 and you could clearly see how much he improved on tape to have an even better 2016.  Explosive burst off the ball and he jars defenders off the snap with his hands, and a good bull rush. Was a productive pass rusher with little diversity in his moves, and could be elite with a wider arsenal. Played 3-4 nose and some 5 technique at a light weight an was consistently disruptive. Could add 10-15 pound and be a full time 3 or 5 technique , or a 4-3 4-3 strong side end who can kick inside in sub packages. Good combine . Elite motor. High ceiling and floor.
WEAKNESSES - Some teams will see him as a tweener. Needs to learn how to play outside in a 4-3. Don't think he would hold up in the NFL like he did in college if played predominantly inside at his current weight, as he already struggles with double teams in college . Needs a lot of work adding pass rush moves and learning how to use his hands.

4.JAMAL ADAMS - S - LSU - 6 foot , 214
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - ERIC BERRY - CHIEFS
STRENGTHS - Team captain , elite vocal leader, and great character. Complete safety. Can play high or low, and cover the slot. Comes downhill with a will and made a lot of key stops. A lot of range in coverage or against the run. I truly believe he could play corner at an above average level in the NFL. Physical tackler. NFL bloodlines. Improved every year in college.  Elite motor. Good combine , and even significantly improved  his 40 at his pro day. High ceiling and floor.
WEAKNESSES - Sometimes over aggressive, and either comes in hot and misses the tackle or bites on the fake. While he missed less tackles this year , he still misses too many to be the last line of the defense, and that's why some teams see him as a box safety only.

COULD HAVE BEEN BLUE CHIPPERS

These players all have blue chip talent, but have either injury, off the field or football character concerns, or their motor isn't always on . They could also have limited tape , play a devalued position , or some combination of any of the questions already mentioned.

5.**MALIK HOOKER - S - OHIO ST. - 6"1" , 206
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - EARL THOMAS - SEAHAWKS
STRENGTHS - Elite , range, instincts, burst, tools and frame for a free safety. Has makeup speed. Times jumps and high points the ball like a receiver. The ball hawk every teams wants to play single high safety. Fluid hips. High ceiling .
WEAKNESSES - Sometimes over aggressive. Either comes in hot and misses the tackle or bites on the fake. Also misses tackles due to poor technique, and while I'm not calling him a pile inspector, he isn't always the guy you want to go heads up in short yardage against a powerful runner. Not interchangeable ,not a blitzer, and would be a liability in the box. Back pedal needs work. One year wonder. Sports hernia and labrum surgery prevented him from working out before the draft.

6.**MARSHON LATTIMORE - CB - OHIO ST. - 6 foot , 193
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - CHAMP BAILEY - retired
STRENGTHS - Solid NFL corner size. Mirrors his man better than any corner in the draft. Very physical and won't back down from anyone. Fluid hips and quick twitch athlete. Makeup speed. Good ball skills. Confident and a short and doesn't let getting beat put him on tilt. Good timing and reads his man to get his hands up to defend the ball. Solid in run support and a solid tackler. Clearly the best corner, and best chance at  being a shutdown corner in a deep corner draft. Good combine . High ceiling .
WEAKNESSES - Sometimes too physical and grabby, and he won't get away with all that contact in the NFL. Not yet an inside guy or a guy who can follow the opposing teams number one receiver all game. Only a one year starter. Chronic hamstring injuries are the only reason I think he's not a lock for the top 5.

7.**RYAN RAMCZYK - OT - WISCONSIN - 6"6" , 314

NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - JORDAN GROSS - retired
STRENGTHS- Solid NFL frame with just enough arm length. Fires off the ball low in the run game with good hip snap most of the time, and keeps his feet moving.Good athlete who is proficient inline and at the second level  . Quick pass set, well balanced, and good feet. Good Awareness on stunts and blitzes. Good hand placement and punch . Strong anchor and rarely gets tall or wide in pass set. Has a mean streak and plays to the whistle.
WEAKNESSES -  Gets caught lunging sometimes, and falls off some blocks. Needs to get stronger to be a true mauler. One year wonder of big school ball , but what a year. Hip injury caused him to miss combine and pro day or I think he would go top 10.

8.OJ HOWARD - TE - ALABAMA - 6"6" , 251
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - GREG OLSEN - PANTHERS
STRENGTHS - Elite , tools , long speed, catch radius, and frame for a TE. Matchup nightmare. Can be true inline TE, power slot, move TE, or you can even split him out wide because of his speed. Good hands. Woefully underused as a receiver, but never complained, and will probably be a much better pro player. Had his best games in the National championship. Made himself into a good run blocker this year, both inline and at the second level. Can run away from DB's in a straight line. Top TE in the best TE class I can remember. Good combine. High ceiling and floor.
WEAKNESSES - Needs to learn to latch on better as a run blocker , and could still get stronger and learn how to explode his hips better. Still a work in progress as a pass blocker despite his willingness, and his awareness on stunts and blitzes is questionable. Especially needs to hunker down &anchor better. Not very elusive after the catch despite his speed.

9.#JOE MIXON - RB - OKLAHOMA - 6"1" , 228
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - LEVEON BELL - STEELERS
STRENGTHS - Great , tools , size, patience, and receiver for a RB. Every down back who can also be split out wide or play the slot . Could be an elite player in a zone heavy scheme, especially on stretch plays. Good burst and long speed. The rare shifty big back that can make you miss and run through tacklers. Good Pro Day . High ceiling and floor.
WEAKNESSES - He was only 18 & drunk when he punched that girl, and she did hit him first , he was suspended for the entire season , has been a solid citizen ever since, apologized , and payed her off, but you don't hit girls dude. Needs to hold onto the ball better. He looked fine in pass pro, but rarely stayed into block. Not sure how good his vision would be a pro style man gap scheme.

10.#**RUEBEN FOSTER - ILB - ALABAMA - 6 foot, 24
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - NAVORRO BOWMAN - 49ers
STRENGTHS - Elite motor.  Vocal leader and violent tone setter. Solid football IQ and ran what was basically a Pro defense at Alabama. Can play any off the ball linebacker spot in any defense. 3 down linebacker who gets low and can take on blocks.. Has the athleticism to make plays sideline to sideline against the run or pass. Speed and fluid hips to turn and run with backs , power slots, and TE's. Easily a top 10 pick on tape this year . Productive blitzer.
WEAKNESSES - Shorter & lighter at the combine than expected, and that means some 4-3 teams will probably only want him as predominately as a weak side backer. Shoulder injury that caused him to miss the combine could be a long term concern. Already had character concerns & worries about who hangs with before the combine. Then he flunked the idiot (diluted urine sample) test and got sent home when he blew up at some combine medical person and got sent home. Doesn't always shed blocks well. Missed too many tackles. Unimaginative blitzer . Too many penalties.

11.CHRISTIAN McCAFFREY - RB - STANFORD - 6 foot , 202
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - TIKI BARBER - retired
STRENGTHS - Back to back years of elite production. Played in the most Pro ready system in college football, and was the focal point of the offense. Good vision & patience. Scheme diverse because he already played in a power heavy offense, and I think he could be even better in a stretch zone heavy system. Smart & shifty runner who rarely takes big hits. Runs routes better than most receivers in the draft. Good burst & long speed. Deep athletic bloodlines & also a great return man. Dominant combine. High character. Doesn't fumble. Improved as a blocker this year. ALL TIME NCAA single season all purpose yardage leader. High ceiling and floor.
WEAKNESSES - Lighter than ideal for a every down back. Won't break many tackles or push the pile. Huge workload the last 2 years, and did get hurt this year, although he was still pretty productive anyway. Willing but may never be great in pass pro.

SAFE First Rounders - All these guys have high floors . I expect that they will at least be above average starters for awhile,, and also expect they will all make a PRO Bowl , but I wouldn't be surprised if any of them became perennial pro bowlers

12.DAVID NJOKU - TE -  MIAMI - 6"4" , 240

NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - VERNON DAVIS - REDSKINS
STRENGTHS - Big enough frame to play inline .  Ridiculously explosive runner after the catch, with strong balance . Will run around, by , through, or leap over defenders. Good combine. When he's a wiling blocker he can be a good at it when he latches on, especially at the 2nd level . Can be a mismatch for defenses inline or as a move TE. Can find holes in the zone. Really high upside and his best football should be ahead of him. Good combine.
WEAKNESSES - Raw everywhere but as a runner. Routes, leverage, hand use, football IQ, everywhere. Not even a full time starter this year and only 8 total starts in 2 years. Too many focus drops. Needs a lot of technique refinement as a blocker, and isn't always willing . Takes awhile to reach top speed. Could add more weight , especially in his legs. Lack of experience shows .

13.**LEONARD FOURNETTE - RB - LSU - 6"1" , 230
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - BO JACKSON - retired
STRENGTHS - Elite power back who bounces off  ,runs through. and over defenders . Shocking long speed for his size. Good balance and even made some people miss this year when healthy . Elite 2015 tape. willing and physical in pass pro. Showed more as a receiver this year too. Finisher who can punish defenders and grind out games in the 4th quarter .
WEAKNESSES - Multiple injuries last season and physical running style could lead to a short career. Lacks scheme diversity. Lack of vision, problems running out of the shotgun,  and need to have a lead blocker make him scheme specific. Limited route tree. A tick late in pass pro too often  . Lacks vision and patience.  Too many fumbles .

14.DEREK BARNETT - DE - TENNESEE - 6"3" , 260

NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - OLIVIER VERNON - GIANTS
STRENGTHS - 3 year starter with great production every year despite becoming the focus off blocking schemes the longer he played .Violent hitter with heavy , tactical, hands .  Knows his assignment  and plays low at the point of attack. Great snap anticipation and strong back field penetration . Piled up the TFL's and sacks , even braking Reggie Whites career Tennessee sack record. Bends the arc around the corner better than edge player in the draft .  High football IQ and can even drop into coverage some. Good motor. High floor.
WEAKNESSES - Better football player than athlete. Average size, won't get much bigger ,and lacks a high ceiling. Average burst and too many off sides. Needs more pass rush moves.

15.**COREY DAVIS - WR - W. MICHIGAN - 6"3" , 209

NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - JORDY NELSON - PACKERS
STRENGTHS - Runs routes better than a lot of NFL receivers . Crafty setting up DB's and good timing to high point the ball . Explosive runner after the catch with good burst, and long speed . NFL height and weight for a #1 receiver . 4 year starter with elite production in college.  High football IQ . Can play any receiver position in any offense against any defensive scheme .  Natural hands catcher and can take a hit. High ceiling and floor.
WEAKNESSES - Lower level of competition. Injury caused him to miss Senior Bowl, combine, and Pro day. Too many drops . Doesn't win as may contested catches as he should at that size.

16.FORREST LAMP - OL - W. KENTUCKY - 6"4" , 305
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - ZACK MARTIN - COWBOYS
STRENGTHS - 4 year starter & 2 year captain who played the blindside for all but 3 games , although I'm convinced he could play all 5 O-line positions . Technician with good timing, feet , balance , punch, and hand placement. Quick efficient pass set with a good anchor. Good awareness on stunts and blitzes. Plays low with good hip snap inline , and latches on inside well. High floor. Flashes a mean streak and plays to the whistle . Played great against both LSU last year and Alabama this year .
WEAKNESSES - Short arms mean most teams won't even try him at tackle. Lower level of competition. If he moves inside he will need to get stronger, unless it's a zone heavy scheme.

17.HAASON REDDICK - LB - TEMPLE , 6"1" , 237
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - JULIAN PETERSON - retired
STRENGTHS - Former walk on DB that ending up shining as an undersized DE at Temple. Versatile high level athlete for an off the ball linebacker, and even though he is very inexperienced there you could see improving everyday at the Senior Bowl practices. Has the athleticism to drop into coverage and will probably fit best on the outside in a 4-3, but he would be an elite blitzer, and you could put him down on the line standing up or with his hand on the ground in sub packages. Despite his lack of size I still think his best position would be as 3-4 OLB rush backer where his elite burst off the ball and closing on the QB would give offenses fits. Gets home on stunts. Fluid , smooth , and flexible to bend the arc outside. Has special teams experience . High ceiling and floor.
WEAKNESSES - Could be easily over powered outside against NFL OT's and even some TE's against the run at his current weight. Raw in coverage and will need to learn how to back pedal. Unimaginative pass rusher. Missed too many tackles. The move to off the ball is a projection, and it could take awhile for him to be an every-down player because of it. Has added over 50 pounds since he got to school and I'm not sue how much more his frame can take without losing what makes him special.

18.BUDDA BAKER - S - WASHINGTON - , 5"10" , 195
NFL PLAYER COMPARISON - TYRANN MATHIEU - CARDINALS
STRENGTHS - Hit the ground and running , started as a true freshman, and got better each of the next 2 years. Elite shirt area burst and good long speed. Not only can cover the slot, has  fluid hips & smooth backpedal , and  I believe he could be a starting corner in the NFL .High floor. Covers a lot of ground as a single high safety , with good instincts, and read and recognition skills. Big hitter for such a small guy . Always around the ball and tough as nails. Leader, winner, and high character and floor.
WEAKNESSES - Undersized , and gets posted up by bigger receivers sometimes. While he has the balls to play SS, I'm not sure he would hold up inside regularly in the box. Overaggressive tendencies cause him to miss some tackles, and he also gets too grabby on coverage.  Too many dropped picks.
