HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL , and I hope you had a Merry Christmas , happy holidays or whatever you celebrate. Whether or not you agree with their choices or seating the playoff field in college has been run through , and we are now only left with the National Championship game. then it's on to The Senior Bowl , some other ALL STAR games, the scouting combine , and then the draft just a little over 3 months away. In the NFL all the non playoff spots , and the wild card games have settled the draft order for the first 24 picks. That means draft season has crept up on us , and right now I am working on my full team write-ups while methodically churning through the tape of the players who have definitely declared. It also means that I will be including trades in my mocks from now on. I still haven't done enough work on a lot of these guys, and with so many more players wisely staying in school these days I don't watch as many players as I used to during the season. January 27 is the last day day for guys to join this draft , or back out ,and until then it's smarter to avoid wasting time watching players who may not be available this year. Right now I am still gathering names , but as soon as we definitively know who's in & out we all have to hit overdrive on our evaluations . Although I have already started watching more tape since the bowl games began , and certain players declared early. While I have watched all of these players actually play , that is not the same as breaking down the film on them. Currently I have broken down the film on one game for 253 players. Plus I have done 3 games on 149 players. Throw in the guys who are draft eligible sophomores that I don't expect to even contemplate going Pro so early, or that haven't played much yet so they aren't on my radar right now , some of the small school guys , and you get the picture. Then chime in with the fact we have only have a partial idea of what teams will need at that time because of injuries, free agency, retirements , the cap, suspensions , trades , and who knows what else could happen ? Plus the transfer portal & NIL money has drastically changed the face of college football , and more guys are wisely staying in school , although that means the lower rounds of the draft will usually have less talent these days. On the bright side more players who enter the league should be better prepared than in the past. Another significant difference between this draft , and other recent ones , is that everybody currently still has their own number one pick. I was expecting at least one ( Vikings) , and maybe even 2 ( Giants) , teams to trade away a 2025 first rounder for a QB in the 2024 draft, but it didn't happen. That probably means 1 or 2 will happen in 2025 for a QB , but we are way too far out to judge that yet. Based off of 2023 tape none of the QB's look like 1rst rounders , although I am not quite half way through the 2024 film. However , I am currently in the midst of doing a deeper dive on 2024 eligible QB's , but I still haven't had any QB revelations yet. So many players disappoint on tape, go back to school, get injuries, get in trouble , surprise in workouts & All Star games , and others come out of the woodwork. So you can see we still have a lot of work to do on these players. To me it's a weird draft so far with very few high ceiling guys that also have a high floor. Plus the deepest position I see as far as good potential starters on the first 2 days of the draft is RB , and that is a position that has been undervalued by the NFL for decades now. The picks are all mine, and so is the remaining playoff order if you want to be mad at someone. A lot of trades will probably happen, but I don't put trades in mocks until it's draft season again.
